x86
From Mac Guides
x86 is a processor architecture invented by Intel and later reverse-engineered by AMD. Similarly, PowerPC is a competing architecture that Apple has used for years in its computers.
The largest producers of x86 processors are Intel and AMD. At the WWDC in 2005 Apple announced that they would be switching to the x86 architecture from PowerPC. Specifically, Apple would be switching to processors produced by Intel.
