Apple released the 5th generation (5G) iPod on October 12th, 2005. This version sported a new 2.5" color screen and provided the first support for video playback. Despite its wider appearance, the 5G iPod had the same overall width and height as the older models. The larger screen, however, took up a greater portion of the case. With this iPod, Apple dropped FireWire support from all iPods.
On September 12, 2006, Apple released a minor revision to the iPod 5G boasting a higher maximum capacity, a brighter screen, new earphones and gapless playback at new lower price points.

Notes
- A prototype photo of the 5G iPod appeared on the internet hours before the official release of the 5th Generation iPod. With the added media attention that Apple has gained with the success of the iPod as well as the legitimization of rumor sites due to Apple's lawsuit, the mainstream press rebroadcast these leaked images.
- Many Apple and technology blogs have noted that Apple are advising retailers to offer a 'non conditional' replacement for this iPod should it develop a fault - even if it appears that the iPod may have been abused or misused. This would appear to be an attempt to neutralize the negative press about iPods scratching easily. This notice only sent to retailers in Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. See this AppleInsider article for more details.
Troubleshooting
As with all clickwheel iPods, you can reset this iPod by first toggling the hold switch on and off and then simultaneously pressing the select (center) and menu buttons for approximately 5-10 seconds. This is a common fix should your iPod behave unexpectedly or lock up. Once reset, the iPod should display an Apple logo for a few seconds before showing the main menu. This procedure is similar to rebooting a computer and damages none of your music or data.
