The Apple Macintosh has primarily used two operating systems over the years.
- Mac OS (Classic) refers to the original Mac System Software up through version 9. The Classic Environment is an Apple program that allows old Mac software to run under OS X.
- Mac OS X (X stands for 10) is the newer Unix-based Mac operating system.
