Apple announced Front Row as a new feature of the iMac G5 on October 12th, 2005. On January 10th, 2006, Apple added Front Row as standard software on the MacBook Pro as well as the updated iMac (Intel). At WWDC 2006, it was announced that Front Row would be included with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard).

Description

Front Row allow users to access music, photos, videos and DVDs through an easy to use on-screen interface navigated by an integrated infra-red remote control included with the iMac G5. It is included with all new iMacs and at the time of press cannot be bought separately.

Front Row on other Platforms

Very shortly after Front Row's debut, several websites started speculated over the possibility of running Front Row on other Macs. Hacked versions of Front Row soon appeared on the internet, with instructions on how to install and use on other Mac OS X systems. These are unsupported by Apple but illustrate a potential future for the software once the buzz of the new iMac G5 quietens down.

Also worth mentioning is'Backrow'. Clearly an imitation of Front Row for Windows XP.
