Leaked on August 22, 2007, the iPod nano (3G) was quickly dubbed the iPod nano 'phatty' by Engadget. Leaked photos revealed a nano which seemed to be out of proportion compared to the previous generation. However, once released, Engadget noted its small size and said "its tapered edges and ridiculously thin frame make up for the squatness going on here."

The new nano featured many significant upgrades. The nano could now play videos on its new 2" screen which boasted a 320x240 resolution - the same as the iPod (5G) and iPod classic. The screen has the highest pixel density of any iPod and the screen is also 65% brighter than its predecessors screen.
