Apple released the iPod shuffle on January 11, 2005. It was notable as being the first screenless iPod as well as being the first iPod to use flash memory. It came with a smaller capacity and lower price than other iPods.
A smaller, second generation iPod shuffle was announced on September 12, 2006.

Notes
- A common mistake that people make with the iPod shuffle is to drag music files onto the iPod Shuffle icon on the desktop, or in 'My Computer' (Windows), thinking that this is the correct way to add music. Anyone new to iPods should note that you always use iTunes to add music, unlike some flash-based MP3 players.
