The iPhone 3GS was announced at WWDC 2009. According to Apple, the 'S' in the name stands for 'Speed', with the iPhone 3GS being about twice as fast as the iPhone 3G. It features a new 3MP camera with a tap-to-focus feature and API support for developers. Unlike its predecessor, the camera can also capture video at 30 FPS with audio. Other new features include voice control which interprets commands such as "call Scott Forstall" or "play more songs like this", a digital compass that shows your orientation and is integrated with the Maps application, new accessibility options (VoiceOver), support for Nike+ and data encryption.

The iPhone 3GS's battery is improved over its predecessor and provides for up to 9 hours of internet surfing, 10 hours of video, 30 hours of audio, 12 hours of 2g talk-time or 5 hours of 3g talk-time. It is available in 16 GB and 32 GB models, $199 and $299 respectively in the United States, and will be available on June 19, 2009. The existing 8 GB iPhone 3G will continue to sell for $99.


The iPhone 3G will be available on June 19, 2009 in the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. it will be available in six more countries a week later, and more later in the year.
