Description

The iMac G3 was introduced in 1998 with a new radical design. The iMac G3 is similar to the Power Macintosh G3 All-In-One model except it includes only USB, Ethernet, 56k Modem, and analog Audio I/O ports and an IrDa (Infrared Data) port. The iMac does not have ADB ports, Serial Ports, or SCSI ports. While this gave companies an advantage to sell new USB accessories, most consumers had to buy new printers, scanners, and other devices. USB to SCSI, ADB, or Serial adapters were available, but most had their share of problems.

  • PowerPC G3 Processor 233 MHz (66 MHz bus)
  • Tray loading 24x CD-ROM
  • 4 GB IDE Hard Disk Drive
  • 32 MB of RAM (expandable to 384 MB - see 'Notes')
  • 2 MB of VRAM (expandable to 4 or 6 MB)
  • Not compatible with AirPort cards

  • The iMac shipped with Mac OS 8.1 along with AppleWorks.

Notes

  • Maximum RAM is 384 MB using two DIMM sockets (256 MB on top, 128 MB on the bottom), uses same SDRAM SO-DIMM as PowerBook G3, top DIMM socket accepts 2" DIMM, bottom socket takes 1.5" DIMM. (www.lowendmac.com)
  • The IrDA function was discontinued in future iMac models. This was a use of infared technology to transfer data between other Macintosh computers with IrDA such as the iMac (Rev A) and the early PowerBook G3 and PowerBook G4.
  • The iMac introduced a new USB Apple Keyboard and Mouse which would become the standard Keyboard and Mouse shipped with all new Macintosh computers like the Blue & White Power Macintosh G3 Tower.
  • The iMac spawned many products, companies, and software begining with the letter "i". The "i" in the iMac originally stood for "internet".
