X11 when referred to by Mac users is Apple's X windowing environment for UNIX application compatability. X11 is not installed by default, but comes with every Mac sold.

Note that the term X11 by itself simply refers to version 11 of the X windowing environment. Apple named their version 11 compliant X window server "X11.app", so this article is named as such. Click here to learn more about the X windowing environment on Wikipedia.

Installing X11

  • Insert the Mac OS X installation CD/DVD.
  • Scroll down and double-click on 'Optional Installs' package
  • Using the installer wizard, select 'Custom', expand 'Applications' and tick X11.
