Software/Games Subcategory

Shouldn't the subcategory "Software : Games" link to this article in some way? --Srobert

Thanks for correcting all my typos by the way ;) --Srobert 09:15, 17 February 2006 (EST)

Neverwinter Nights is not UB yet, but there are two beta patches for PPC and Intel respectively. http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=466407&forum=71&sp=15

Most people use this list to find out if a native version of a game will work with their Intel Mac. Because of this, I think it might be a good idea to introduce another color coding for games that do not have a universal binary available, but do have an x86 or x86-64 native version available. Purple? Brown? Ligther red? --Bugmenot 14:24, 17 January 2007 (EST)

Interesting. Maybe a 5-star system (or 5 apples?) could work wor this. Somethng in the lines of: • = Won't run at all, •• = Very poor performance or buggy, ••• = Acceptable, •••• = Good performance, ••••• = Native (or almost) performance --Srobert 11:30, 24 January 2007 (EST)

Specific Game Comments

Myst IV

I tried Myst IV on my MacBook pro and it did not run properly. Does anyone have any information by Ubisoft on UB or rosetta compatability?

Simcity 4

Plays okay, a lot better than on my iBook G4, a few graphics issues and may crash.

There has been conflicting report as to whether yes or no Sim City 4 will be updated to Universal Binary. Yes? or No? --Srobert 10:47, 29 May 2006 (EDT)

NWN Universal Binary announced

I don't have an account, so can't post this myself. Someone with an account can check the forum post to verify and then update the page.

Update - 20060826 With the support for NWN being dropped by by Atari (this includes updates, premium modules, etc) it is unlikely that a Universal Binary will surface. There's been no word for 4 months on the official forums and I can't see MacSoft separately employing anyone to perform the work, even if there was some legal way in which they could.

Sims 2: Nightlife and University

The patch RevD for Sims 2 only works on the original game. Patches for University & Nightlife should be considered announced based on the Tech Talk comments in this newsletter:

  http://www.aspyr.com/htmlnewsletter.php?p_newsletter_id=149

Also, BodyShop (the app for adding custom content) is still a PowerPC only app.

Warcraft III

I've done extensive testing with my MacBook Pro and it is clear Rosetta is bottlenecking performance. I am hard pressed to believe any of the offhand reports of Warcraft 3 running "perfectly" or anything near perfectly. The game can be played but the lack of performance cripples much of the enjoyment, especially in large battles where the framerate drops to slide-show levels. I don't believe it is fair to continue to disseminate information that will suggest to anyone the game runs perfectly at this time. Any long time WC3 player is quickly going to know a universal binary is necessary for full enjoyment of this game on mactel. --Deadprez

2006/07/27 When I installed Warcraft III on my MacBook Pro it would start and promptly crash back to the desktop, it appears that DivX Codec has something to do with it, after I deleted DivX off of my machine I was able to run WCIII without any problems, even in larger battles. Regards, ExSgt Fish

22/09/2006 TFT crashes instantly for me when trying to start the solo campaign, but works fine with replays and on b.net. I do however have 2 gigs of ram and rarely play anything other than 2v2s but even the one 3v3 I had has been perfectly playable. Done on an iMac core duo.

Heroes V

The page currently says that Heroes V is to be released between May and December 2006; however, according to a recent post on HOMM•V for MacOSX, Freeverse has not announced a release date, and "it won't be an easy port." A May date is clearly ridiculous (given it is now May 25 and Freeverse just received the code), and depending on how things go December might be rather off, as well. Should this be changed to reflect the fact that no one really knows when the game will be released? --George the Flea

The Sims 2 Body Shop

Is it okay to add the Sims 2 Body Shop to the list? Or does it not constitute an actual game?

I figure it would be beneficial to add the Body Shop to the list so that people owning an Intel Mac would know that the Body Shop is not Universal and runs under Rosetta (with very poor performance).

Maybe we could add it as some sort of note in the Sims 2 section. Any thoughts? -thegreatluke

Civilization 3 Complete

There is now a 42MB Universal patch available at this adress: http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=19275 I do not have the necessary posts to create a login and to edit the article: could someone take care of updating the table? Cheers!!!

Curious about 2 games

Anyone know anythign about performance of starcraft in rosetta? Is Colse Combat: First To Fight universal?

I have the Star Craft Battle Chest at home, it seemed to run fine on my MacBook and Intel iMac. The game doesn't seem to require much to run (It'll run on a 333Mh iMac) so the performance should be pretty good. When I get a chance I'll open it again and see how it runs. Mislabled games?

Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone were labeled red (PowerPC) but had "Universal" typed in the label. I erased Universal and typed in PowerPC, I did this because after some research I could not find any information about either of the games on Intel Macs, so I assumed that this was a mistake.

Oh yes, sorry, when I did a mass edit to change the format, I may have made some mistakes, sorry..Torchwood04 18:34, 6 September 2007 (EDT)

New Colors

Two Consistency issues:

1) LEGO Star Wars. Why does it say "Unknown", when the rest of the reds say "No"? Is there any reason for it to be unique?

2) Unreleased games that will launch as UB's. Should they be "Green/Yes" like Civ IV? Or "Yellow/Announced" like Quake 4?

About 1) I think it was a mistake. Should be "No". How does that sound? Unknown should only be for unreleased game, for which the Publishers have'nt comfirmed if they would be released as UB --Srobert 23:05, 20 March 2006 (EST)
About 2) Hmmm… I think I would go with "Yellow/Announced" but it's a matter of taste. I think Green stuff should be reserved for games that people can play as UB right now. But you're right, should be the same accross the board. --Srobert 23:05, 20 March 2006 (EST)
If you agree with this, feel free to make the necessay changes. --Srobert 23:07, 20 March 2006 (EST)
Done
Thanks… Kaylee? Looks neat. --Srobert 13:22, 21 March 2006 (EST)
I added the Intel tag (blue) in the chart below since I saw it used on the list, but not listed here. --User:LimeiBook86 13:40, 2 September 2007 (EST)

Guidelines? --Srobert 13:47, 21 March 2006 (EST)

Universal For games developped as Universal Binary from the start. Never were a Power PC only version
Universal (Update) For games originally released as Power PC but that now have a Universal Binary update.
Universal (Alpha) A playable UB Alpha is available for download.
Universal (Beta) A playable UB Beta is available for download.
Announced Either for:
A) Power PC games for which a not yet released UB update has been announced by the developer or
B) Announced games that will be released as Universal Binary.
PowerPC For released games that don't have a universal binary update planned.
Intel For released games that only support Intel Macs.

I changed the table formatting a little hoping to lighten it. Is the type size too small? ---Srobert 15:08, 27 March 2006 (EST)

Added: light green for PPC games playable under Rosetta

The purpose of this chart is to show whether a game is playable on Intel Mac or not, therefore light green color was added.

Was thinking about different light green for fully playable PPC games or PPC games that slows down in certain parts. However, performance of a game is subjective, depending on the Mac specs and personal preferences, so sub-colors of Intel playable PPC games probably won't work.

PPC (runs well) For PPC games that runs well, very well under Rosetta

Big 2008 Revamp

How about a big 2008 Revamp?

We could update to a new up-to-date and broader tittle? (e.g.: Old MAc games and Intel Mac Compatibility)

How about a more detailed template? (inspired by Consultant):

Game Title Released Publisher Architecture UB Patch Rosetta Performance OS X Compatibility Notes
PPC UB Intel 10.0 10.1 10.2 10.3 10.4 10.5
007: Nightfire 2004 Aspyr Good
4x4 Evolution 2 2002 Aspyr Good
Acropolis 2006 GameHouse -
Age of Empires II 2001 MacSoft Satisfactory
Age of Mythology 2003 MacSoft 2.0.1 Satisfactory UB update for US retail version only
Alien Vs Predator 2 2003 MacPlay Good No multiplayer mode with Rosetta
Battlefield 2142 2007 EA Games - GMA 950 not supported
Aa 0000 Aa - Aa

Any thoughts?

Breaking apart article by Genre

X-Posted on Talk:Intel Mac Games and Talk:Free Mac Games

If you're going to include exhaustive lists of Mac games the list is going to get fairly long overtime and if Apple continues making deals with other developers, well it's going to become a fairly long list fairly quickly like that. I propose breaking apart these articles into games listed by Genre, specifically: Role-playing Games, Action, Adventure, Racing or Driving, Sports, Shooters, Classic (Board and Card), etc. --Sebastianlewis 23:34, 30 May 2008 (EDT)
