Talk:Ripping a DVD to an iPod Video
From Mac Guides

External links and updated information
Since I was unable to edit the article, I figured I'd pop this discussion up on it.
It is worth adding this as an external link in the article.
As well, worth noting, MacTheRipper is generally required for DVDs with Macrovision encryption on it since Handbrake doesn't include the ability to pull Macrovision off the stream.
Why is this page locked?
Why can't I edit this page? It needs tidying up and the title needs changing. 'Gen5' is not a conventional way of referring to the iPod video.
Also I'm concerned that there may need to be some disclaimer about ensuring you are entitled to rip a DVD onto another device.
Guides should also not include comments like "my name is... contact me in the forums if you need any help". Whilst a kind gesture, it is not really appropriate for an encyclopedia.

- I agree, I can only guess that Clayj locked it himself to protect his status as the sole author. Since this isn't how the wiki works (at the bottom of each edit page is the text "If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then don't submit it here."), I'm unprotecting it. --HexMonkey 16:39, 5 January 2006 (EST)
Why I Locked It
Because, in my experience with writing technical content, someone will frak it up. Wikipedia ain't exactly known for its accuracy.
And why I said "Gen5 iPod" is easy... the official name of the product does not include the word "Video", and every time someone says "G5 iPod" or "iPod G5", someone invariably makes a comment about it not being powered by a "G5" chip. (See: Any of the plethora of discussions concerning the mythical G5 PowerBook.) --Clayj
- I don't think that's a problem, we have enough people monitoring changes that we'll be able to revert changes like that. If there are too many problems, we can protect it later, but not at least without giving it a chance to be healthily edited.
- I was also of the opinion that "5G" was the accepted format for "5th generation" rather than "G5", resulting in less confusion. However, I think using "Video" would be better in this case because, even if it's not official, it would encompass the current generation as well as any future revisions, ie it would be future-proofing the article. --HexMonkey 17:05, 5 January 2006 (EST)
I realize now I may have come across a bit harsh or aggressive before, I'm sorry I didn't mean to, it's just I was fairly sure I could contribute to the benefit of this guide. The fact remains that the whole nature of wikipedia, as HexMonkey emphasizes, is that it's freely editable to all. Exceptions to this rule might include guides that are being frequently vandalized or are being edited simultaneously by a great number of users (locking it would avoid the loss of peoples time when they discover their changes haven't been saved)
Although I have not thoroughly read the technical steps you have created in this guide, I'm sure they will prove useful to many users. I can see it becoming a popular page. I do however believe that the standards need to be improved and you need to let other people help achieve that.

Might want to include a comment about Handbrake Lite (http://www.isquint.org/handbrakelite/). It's MUCH easier on the beginner. I'm not really sure where it would fit in, and this is locked so I can't do it myself but I think it's useful enough to suggest. <sp_ch>friend</sp_ch>
Rewrite article
This article doesn't seem particularly easy to understand, I have never felt the need to do into so much detail, possibly an advanced article could be written along with a more basic one, Handbrake Lite could be mentioned too.
Also settings for the Apple-TV and iPhone should be mentioned as well.
PS On MPEG 4 vs H264, aren't they both the same resolution now, with MPEG 4's advantage simply being that it's quicker to rip?
