Talk:Configuring 5.1 Surround Output in Mac OS X

why doesn't this article address the rather useful optical output found on roughly half of all current macs? You can play DTS-encoded multichannel audio from any source in OS X with just a couple of steps. If you have a receiver with an open optical input (most receivers only have one set of 6-channel inputs, and most people are using them with a different source, so they aren't readily available for computer use), an optical cable and, in some cases, a mini toslink adapter, you're good to go if your mac has the right connection. you can play dts or dolby digital files through VLC or through itunes (using ALAC encoding on the files). There are a lot of DTS-CDs out there and an optical-enabled mac is the easiest way to incorporate this stuff into a music library. It's very complicated to do this with either a windows XP or Vista machine. In fact, it's not possible in vista yet. --Benpatient 14:10, 23 April 2007 (EDT)
