Talk:Bits And Bytes
From Mac Guides
Any page dealing with the transfer of information (Ethernet, FireWire, Broadband, etc.) should link to this page so that people are not confused as to the difference between FW800 moving at 800Mbps but their files moving at 'only' 100MBps. Mechcozmo 23:07, 15 November 2005 (EST)
HexMonkey, good catch on the 1MB=1024KB thing. But that should be in the article as well, shouldn't it? Not just in my math for a dial-up modem? (Which due to federal limits goes at a max of 53Kbps anywhoo but never gets near that anyway) --Mechcozmo 01:49, 16 November 2005 (EST)
I've created a much larger article on various computing units. Perhaps this article should be integrated with it. --HexMonkey 03:03, 16 November 2005 (EST)
- I agree. This existing article would need a big cleanup anyways. --Mainstreetmark 09:25, 16 November 2005 (EST)
- I like the much larger article, but I'm not sure if it will be as easy to explain to people on that page as it can be with this one. Plus, this one has a catchy title ;-). But seriously, I wouldn't mind cleaning this article up some (even if it meant stripping it down a bit) so that people get the bit and byte difference, and link to the Computing Units article for a more expanded view. Does that sound like a good idea? --Mechcozmo 23:38, 16 November 2005 (EST)
- That sounds good, as long as this article sticks to the difference between bits and bytes and the surrounding confusion surrounding, so that it doesn't overlap too much with the Computing Units article. --HexMonkey 23:55, 16 November 2005 (EST)
- All right, I'll slowly start working on it... surprising amount of work to do :-\ --Mechcozmo 19:07, 17 November 2005 (EST)
Is this sufficiently cleaned up to everyone's liking without stepping on the toes of the Computing Units article? --Mechcozmo 23:19, 22 November 2005 (EST)
- Yes, it looks good. The only improvement I can think of is to make the link to the Computing Units article more prominent, eg mentioning it in the introduction or in italics at the top of the article (for example, "This article is a comparison of bits and bytes. For a more general overview of computing units, see the Computing Units article.") --HexMonkey 23:31, 22 November 2005 (EST)
