SSH into your iPod touch (Windows)

This guide explains how to use SSH to access your iPod touch using Windows.

SSH Connection

  1. Install OpenSSH onto your iPod touch. It can be found under 'System' in the Installer
    • You need to "jailbreak" your iPod to get the Installer
  2. Download PuTTY from here
  3. Run PuTTY
  4. Find your iPod touch's IP address
    1. Open the 'Settings' on your iPod
    2. Go to 'Wifi'
    3. Click the blue arrow beside your network's name
    4. Go to the 'Static' tab
    5. You will find you IP Address listed there
  5. Enter your iPod touch's IP address into the 'Host Name' box, inside of PuTTY
  6. Make sure the 'Port' box contains '22'
  7. Make sure you are on your iPod touch is on (not sleeping, or off), and click 'Open'
  8. It may take a while to first connect, but make sure your iPod stays on for this whole process
  9. You will get a warning message about a security breach. Simply press 'Yes'
  10. In the terminal, when 'login as:' appears, type 'root'
  11. When it prompts you for a password, type 'alpine'. NOTE: It appears you are not typing anything, but you really are

Your iPod touch is now open to SSHing.

File Access

  1. Download WinSCP from here
  2. Install WinSCP
  3. Run WinSCP
  4. Input the following in the corresponding fields:
    • Host name: [You IP address]
    • Port number: 22
    • User name: root
    • Password: alpine
  5. Click 'Login'

You are now browsing your iPod touch's innards.
