MacRumors believes that good reviews should have the following characteristics:

  • Scientific: A set grading scale is used and explained to readers
  • Thorough: All aspects of the product are investigated, rather than just the obvious ones.
  • Unbiased: Bias is not unduly given to or put against a product

At MacRumors, we have felt there has been a lack of such quality reviews on the web for some time, and will strive to bring you high quality reviews whenever possible.

Criteria and Grading

In order to perform a well-rounded review, we consider the following "categories" when calculating our final score.

  • 20% -- Ease of Use. Was it easy to set up? Is the interface intuitive? Is it enjoyable or convenient to use? Is documentation informative and sufficient?
  • 20% -- Features. How complete a feature set does it have? Is it a well-rounded product? How well does it suit its intended purposes? Does it have innovations that set it apart?
  • 25% -- Performance. How well does it perform its tasks (relative to its feature-set)? How well does it integrate with other products?
  • 25% -- Reliability and lifespan. Is the product made well? How sturdy or breakable is it? Does it have glitches? Is it prone to hang or crash? Is it upgradeable? How long is the expected useful life of the product? How long is the warranty and how much does it cover?
  • 10% -- Value. How reasonable is the price for what you get? How does the product stack up against the competition and within its product line?

The total score out of 100% will then be translated to a letter-grade:

A+ 97 - 100 C 73 - 76.9
A 93 - 96.9 C- 70 - 72.9
