This guide is intended to help members learn how to reply to multiple people, in one post. The main benefit of doing this would be to prevent messy looking forums, and multiple short posts.

Why you may want to combine posts

On the MacRumors Forums, one may find themselves caught up in a conversation requiring them to post multiple replies. This issue is usually caused by a reader starting at the beginning of a thread and spotting a post that they would like to reply to. Many times after that reply is completed, one may later see other posts that they feel they need to comment on. The problem with this, is the fact that one can end up with two replies next to each other in the same thread.

Note: Preferably, you should read an entire thread before posting a reply, to ensure that you do not post something similar to another member.

In most cases multiple replies are acceptable, and even encouraged, especially if the intention is to further contribute to the conversation. One scenario that should be avoided, however, is multiple posts by the same author next to each other in any given thread. This issue is part of the Forum Rules because it can be bothersome to other members. Posts made in quick succession will be merged if spotted by moderators or reported by other members. Regularly posting this way may be perceived as spamming the forums.

Combining your posts

This article will explain two way of combining your posts.

Editing your post to add additional quotes

This method is useful if you have already made a reply, but then wish to comment on another post.
Please note that the "command" key on an Apple keyboard is the key with the Apple logo.

  1. First post your original comment.
  2. After posting, locate the second post you want to comment on. Click the Quote button on the bottom right of the post.
  3. Instead of posting a reply like you normally would, select all the text in the reply window and copy it by typing command-C (control-C in Windows). Alternatively, you could copy the text from the thread view, however you would then have to manually add quote tags in the format:
    [quote=username]Quoted content[/quote]

  4. Go back to your original post (by using your browser's back button or otherwise), and click the Edit button.
  5. Paste the text you copied in step 3 at the end of your post (or where you require) by typing command-V (control-V in Windows). After pasting the text, respond to the quoted comment as you normally would

  6. When you are satisfied with your reply (spell checking is a good idea), click Save. You should now have two quotes in one post, rather than in two separate posts.

Responding to multiple quotes at the same time

As an alternative to the above method, you can include both quotes in your original post (eliminating editing), as long as you know which two posts you want to comment on before posting your comment.

  1. Find the first post you want to comment on, and click the Quote button on the bottom right on the post.
  2. Without writing anything, copy the text in the text field of the reply window.
  3. Go back to the thread and locate the second post you want to comment on.
  4. Again, click the Quote button on that post.
  5. Paste the first quote inside the text field of the new reply window, either at the top or at the bottom.
  6. Write your responses to the quotes and post the message by clicking Save.
