PowerBook Duo

The PowerBook Duo was Apple's attempt to create a computer that combined the best features of a laptop with the best features of a desktop. A trademark feature of the Duo series was the Duo Dock, a docking station in which the Duo slid, giving the laptop access to extra hard drives, RAM, video RAM, as well as additional removable drives. The Dock would also charge the laptop's battery.

The Duo can be seen as an early predecessor to the iBook, however an important distinction must be made: The Duo was designed to interface with a dock in order to operate at its peak, while the iBook was designed to operate without any sort of 'home base.' Although a Duo is quite capable of operating without the Dock (the Dock was sold separately) there are a number of limitations that are encountered when trying to use the Duo as a stand-alone desktop.
