OpenOffice.org is an open source office suite, aimed at a similar feature set to Microsoft Office. Because of its dependency on X11, many users prefer the Cocoa enabled NeoOffice.

A word processor, similar to Microsoft Word but with a slightly different feature set; it has some advanced features that don't exist in Microsoft Word such as word completion, easy creation of Tables of Contents and image figure numbering.

Presentation software, similar to PowerPoint.
Math
A math program, that allows easy creation of mathematical equations, it has a LaTeX style syntax as well as an extensive library to create equations without learning the syntax.
Draw
A drawing program, similar to Visio.
Calc
A spreadsheet program, similar to Excel.
Base
A database program, similar to Access.
