Menu Extras
From Mac Guides
Menu Extras are menus that appear on the right side of the menu bar, and always appear regardless of the current application. They are typically used for tasks related to the whole system rather than the current application, although this is not always the case.

Adding Menu Extras
Most menu extras can be added by checking a checkbox in the appropriate pane of System Preferences. However, they can also be added manually by opening the menu extra file. These files are located in:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/
Removing Menu Extras
Removing menu extras is very simple. While holding down the command key, drag the menu extra off the menu bar.
Rearranging Menu Extras
Rearranging menu extras is similar to removing them. Hold down the command key and drag a menu extra to a different on the menu bar.
Third Party Menu Extras
Some third party applications add menu extras. Unfortunately most of these do not behave in the same way as normal menu extras, and can't be removed or rearranged as normal. To remove these menu extras, change the appropriate option in the third party application.
