iPod mini

The iPod mini, released in January 2004, was Apple's attempt to steal away market share from the flash-based or budget end of the MP3 player market. The mini was originally released in five colors (blue, silver, pink, green and gold) and had a 4GB microdrive hard disk for storage. Apple updated the model in February 2005 by dropping the gold color and adding a 6GB version of the remaining colors.
The iPod mini was discontinued on the 7th September 2005, when Apple introduced the iPod nano.

Configurations
1st Generation ($249)
- Available in blue, silver, pink, green or gold.
- 4GB hard disk.
2nd Generation (4GB $199, 6GB $249)
- Available in blue, silver, pink or green. Colors were now deeper and reflected in the type on the Click Wheel.
- 4GB or 6GB hard disk.
New Features
- At the time of release, Apple's smallest iPod.
- Was the first iPod to use a clickwheel with built in buttons. This was carried over to the main iPod line with the release of the 4th Generation iPod.
- Anodized aluminum casing. Scratch and smudge resistant.
Technical & Notes of Interest
- Measurements: 3.6 x 2.0 x 0.5
- Screen: 138 x 110 pixel monochrome LCD
- Battery performance: 1st gen up to 8 hours, 2nd gen up to 18 hours.
- The iPod Mini uses an IBM/Hitachi Microdrive internally for storage. It is possible to replace this drive with a CompactFlash card to turn the Mini into a solid-state iPod.

- 1st generation mini's included a mains charger. 2nd generation units do not.
Troubleshooting
As with all clickwheel iPods, you can reset this iPod by first toggling the hold switch on and off and then simultaneously pressing the select (center) and menu buttons for approximately 5-10 seconds. This is a common fix should your iPod behave unexpectedly or lock up. Once reset, the iPod should display an Apple logo for a few seconds before showing the main menu. This procedure is similar to rebooting a computer and damages none of your music or data.
