On September 16th 2005, Apple applied for a patent on the "Operation of a computer with touch screen interface". The patent describes some intricacies in gathering additional information from a touch screen interface, and offering a richer user experience.

  • Fig 3 shows the use of area to determine the amount of pressure used by the user
  • Fig 6B shows an algorithm to determine an action based on how long the user presses a button
  • Fig 9 shows how gestures could be used to invoke special characters. Imagine a user pressing on "e" and then stroking towards one of the shown special characters in order to recall one of them
  • Fig 10 shows special buttons that could be time sensitive. Pressing on delete would require the user to keep the button down longer for it to register
  • Fig 11 shows a preview of what key is being pressed. Pressing and holding a key shows "E" on the screen which is what would be typed if the finger is lifted. If the user moves the finger without lifting it, they could choose another letter without the "E" being "typed".
